UFC 201 fight card: Rose Namajunas vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz full fight preview

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
Strawweight contenders Rose
Namajunas and Karolina Kowalkiewicz
will look to earn a 115-pound title shot
this Saturday (July 30, 2016) at UFC 201
inside Philips Arena in Atlanta,
Georgia.
Since losing her initial title bid in her
Octagon debut, Namajunas has been
on fire. She’s won her last three fights
— including a pair of finishes — and
will look to take her final step in
earning a title shot. Meanwhile,
Kowalkiewicz has only been a UFC
fighter for about seven months now,
but she’s quickly made a strong
impression. Undefeated as a
professional, a successful jump in
competition against "Thug Rose" will
slingshot the Polish fighter into the
title picture.
Let’s take a look at the keys to victory
for both women:
Rose Namajunas
Record : 5-2
Key Wins: Tecia Torres (UFC on FOX 19)
, Paige VanZant (UFC Fight Night 80),
Randa Markos (TUF 20*), Angela Hill
(UFC 192)
Key Losses: Carla Esparze (TUF 20
Finale), Tecia Torres (Invicta FC 4)
Keys to Victory: Though she's one of
the youngest fighters in her division,
Namajunas' karate background and
submission acumen make her rather
well-rounded. In five fights, she's
finished all but one of her foes by
submission.
In this bout, Namajunas will have to
continue to blend her skills to earn the
victory. That's a balance that she's
managed well in her last three fights,
which is why she's won each of those
match ups.
While on the feet, Namajunas needs to
keep her composure and work from
the outside while setting up the
takedown. Kowalkiewicz does a very
nice job of countering her opponent's
as they rush in and dive for takedown
attempts, so it's important that "Thug
Rose" stay tight but offensive.
Additionally, Namajunas needs to
match her opponent's volume.
Kowalkiewicz throws at a high pace
and can do so for three rounds, so
Namajunas cannot allow herself to fall
behind on points. If that happens,
getting more desperate with her
combinations and takedowns will only
leave her more vulnerable.
VS.
Karolina Kowalkiewicz
Record : 9-0
Key Wins: Randa Markos (UFC on FOX
17), Heather Jo Clark (UFC Fight Night
87), Mizuki Inoue (Invicta FC 9)
Key Losses: None
Keys to Victory: Kowalkiewicz is a high-
volume Muay Thai striker with some
solid takedown defense. Though she's
not particularly well-known,
Kowalkiewicz does have the skill set
necessary to trouble Namajunas.
For Kowalkiewicz, the goal should be
maintain her range and out-work
Namajunas. Though "Thug Rose" can
kick and grapple well, her transitions
between those two distances aren't
always the smoothest.
With that in mind, Kowalkiewicz should
look to at least match Namajunas'
distance output. On occasion, she can
look to move into the boxing range —
where she likely holds an advantage
— and score with some crisp punches.
If she's able to accomplish those goals,
the pressure will be on Namajunas to
push forward and land a takedown.
Thus far, Kowalkiewicz has proven to
be very effective at both defending the
shot and punishing her foe for the
attempt.
If Kowalkiewicz is able to play her
game and force Namajunas out of her
comfort zone, we could very well be in
for an upset.
Bottom Line: It’s a scrap between two
members of the Top 5 -- the winner
should receive a title shot.
Namajunas has proven repeatedly that
she’s a serious force despite her
inexperience. In all honesty, it’s hard
to see any current contenders except
"Thug Rose" defeat Jedrzejczyk, even
if it is a major long shot. With a win
here, Namajunas gets her second shot
at UFC gold before her 25th birthday.
On the other hand, a loss here shows
that Namajunas still has more to learn
before she can challenge for the belt
again.
This is a far more vital fight for
Kowalkiewicz. Unlike her opponent,
the Polish striker is already 30 years
old, so she should be in her athletic
prime. If she’s to rise to the top and
hold the belt, her moment is now.
A win gets her that opportunity.
Alternatively, Kowalkiewicz loses quite
a bit of momentum if she comes up
short. That’s not to say she cannot
work her way to a title shot —
Strawweight is lacking in potential
opponents for Joanna "Champion" —
but she’ll need at least two or three
wins.
At UFC 201, Rose Namajunas and
Karolina Kowalkiewicz will look to earn
a title shot. Which fighter will have her
hand raised?

Jake Roberts Talks Possible WWE Return, Wrestling Needing Some Help, Roddy Piper, Dusty Rhodes

Mike Jones of DC 101 recently
interviewed WWE Hall of Famer Jake
"The Snake" Roberts, who was
promoting his new film The Bet, which
also stars DDP and "Rowdy" Roddy
Piper, in his last film role. You can
listen to the full interview in the video
above, they sent us these highlights:
.
.
.
Playing his role in The Bet:
"As soon as I found out I was going to
be the owner of a gourmet condom
company, I said 'Hell yeah, that's
something I've always wanted to do!' I
was all in because the story was just
ridiculous and we wanted to have
some fun and it shows in the film."
Missing Roddy Piper and Dusty Rhodes:
"He and Dusty Rhodes, man, they're
irreplaceable. Forget about it, there
will never be anybody like Roddy Piper
and there will never be anybody like
Dusty Rhodes. It just blows my mind
that I'm still here and they're not."
Reservations about doing The
Resurrection Of Jake The Snake
Roberts:
"I struggled with doing it at the
beginning, because I've been burned
by some people before. But to do it
with Dallas and know that I had total
control of the movie. If I didn't want it
to come out, it wouldn't come out.
Trust was a big part of it and once I
saw the final product, I thought, 'you
know what, this is going to help so
many people.'"

WWE Q2 Analysis, Would WWE Entertain A Sale Like UFC?, WrestleMania, Live Attendance Drops

This morning, WWE reported record
revenue of $199.0 million for the
second quarter of 2016 (April-June).
This included the impact of
WrestleMania 32 which generated
more than $21.5 million in live event
revenue, $4.0 million from traditional
pay-per-view sales and $3.9 million of
venue merchandise sales. There were
1,517,000 average paid WWE Network
subscribers during the quarter (firmly
in line with WWE's guidance of
"approximately 1.5 million") and as of
June 30, 2016 there was 1,130,000
domestic subscribers and 381,000
international subscribers.
.
.
.
Because WrestleMania 31 was in the
first quarter of 2015 and WrestleMania
32 was in the second quarter of 2016,
the best way to compare financial
results is to look at the combined year-
to-date six month data.
For the first half of the year (H1), WWE
net revenue has grown 13% compared
to the prior year. More than half of the
company's growth has been driven by
gains in the Network and Live Events
segments. However, this $43.7 million
increase in revenue only corresponded
to a $900,000 increase in OIBDA
(operating income before depreciation
and amortization excluding feature
film and television production
amortization and related impairments
– essentially how WWE measures
"profit"). Notably, despite $14.4 million
growth in the Network segment net
revenue (WWE Network + PPV), the
Network OIBDA on this segment
actually declined by $5.6 million. The
majority of the rise in Corporate &
Other expenses was due to "global
branding, data analytics, and certain
talent initiatives, as well as increased
legal expenses related to ongoing
litigation" in Q2'16.
While non-WrestleMania live event
attendance in North America has
dropped about 5% this year (6,100/
show for January-June 2015 compared
to 5,800/show for January-June 2016),
WWE has been successful at raising
ticket prices (+6% in Q1'16, +12% in
Q2'16). Despite WWE's press release
that WrestleMania drew 101,763 fans,
the latest Key Performance Indicators
slide suggests that actual paid live
event attendance for WrestleMania
was in the range of 74,000 to 86,000
people. In Q2'16, WWE had a very
successful European tour where they
averaged 8,000 fans over 19 events
(compared to 6,900 fans over 21
events during Q2'15). Overall, WWE's
live event growth continues to come
from increased monetization of the
remaining domestic fans and growing
business internationally.
Paid WWE Network subscribers are
currently at an all-time high of
1,130,000 domestic and 381,000
international accounts as of June 30,
2016. Paid domestic subscribers have
increased by 21,000 households since
WrestleMania 32 while international
paid WWE Network subscribers have
increased by 36,000 households. Last
year, paid domestic subscribers fell by
184,000 between WrestleMania 31 and
June 30, 2015 while paid international
subscribers increased by 25,000. Free
trials on the WWE Network reached
their peak at WrestleMania 32 with
281,000 domestic accounts and 89,000
international accounts. That number
has returned to the usual levels of
36,000 domestic accounts and 13,000
international accounts. Was the #
FreeWrestleMania promotion a
success? WWE was successful at
growing the number of paid
subscribers from WrestleMania (as
opposed to last year when they
registered less subscribers by June 30).
However, the true value of these
subscribers will come with longevity. If
they are still subscribers at the end of
the year, it was probably a worthwhile
investment. At this time, we don't
have enough specific information from
WWE to categorize it as anything
stronger than a gamble that may still
pay off.
WWE Chairman and CEO Vince
McMahon along with Chief Strategy
and Financial Officer George Barrios
shared prepared remarks and
answered questions during the
earnings call. Vince noted that he was
"pleased with the execution of our
strategy to optimize the long-term
value of our content. He called out
progress on "continued year-over-
year growth of WWE Network, the
transition of SmackDown to a live
format every week, and the
completion of our first exclusive
content agreement in China."
Regarding the recent PPTV deal in
China, WWE talked about how this was
their first exclusive deal in China and
specifically their first digital exclusive
deal. Instead of waiting several weeks
for editing, both Raw and SmackDown
are being aired live in the Chinese
market in Mandarin. As Barrios told
analyst Laura Martin, "I think you're
seeing similar to other parts of the
world that live content has a
premium".
On the brand extension, Vince noted
that things were "working thus far
very, very well" and they were pleased
with the high rating for the Draft on
live SmackDown. However, when
analyst Eric Katz asked whether
storyline programming (such as the
brand extension second screen
experience) was having any notably
influence on gaining WWE Network
subscriptions, Barrios noted,
"SmackDown went live one week ago.
The Brand Extension kicked off three
days ago. We don't have trends in
place but our expectation is more
engagement across all platforms."
Analyst Brandon Ross also asked
about the Brand Extension and the
rationale for why WWE moved ahead,
especially considering that there
would be increased costs. Vince
McMahon responded that they had a
"plethora of talent due to Paul
Levesque's influence on the training
center" and that WWE wanted to
"more personalities, more licensing
opportunities" and expected to
generate more income from the added
pay-per-view events. George Barrios
did admit that the guidance that WWE
gave last year about 2016 did not
include this brand extension while the
guidance that the company is
providing now does.
Regarding gift cards for the WWE
Network, Barrios remarked that the
company believes in the non-holiday
season, most of these gift cards are
being purchased by the primary user
as a form of payment option. The
future may also include gift cards with
a longer duration.
There was a question at the end about
the UFC sale. Barrios response to about
the wildly different valuations of WWE
and UFC was that, "with them not
being public, all you have is what's in
the media". The CFO also said that the
UFC transaction "reflects the value
people are putting on branded live
content." When asked when WWE
would ever entertain a similar sale,
WWE gave their stock answer: "We're
always willing to listen. All we care
about is doing what's best for our
audience, our shareholders and our
employees. If someone has a great
idea, we're open to listening to it."
There was no discussion about Brock
Lesnar's failed USADA test nor any
blockbuster announcements of new
WWE Network programming. Currently,
WWE is projecting a rosy financial
picture for the remainder of 2016. As
noted in the earnings call
presentation: "If recent subscriber
acquisition and retention trends
continue over the remainder of 2016,
management believes growth in
subscribers would be at the upper end
of the range and Adjusted 2016 OIBDA
would be $80M-$85M." That would be
an improvement over 2015 OIBDA of $
61.6 million. However, a lot of
questions remain about whether the
brand extension will be successful in
keeping fans engagement and
spending money on WWE products.
WWE told one analyst that they did not
expect any impact from the Olympics.
Still, WWE television ratings in Q2
continued to slide with 11% decline for
Raw and 10% decline for SmackDown
(which had moved Networks and
moved nights). Meanwhile, the decline
for USA Network and Top 25 Cable
Networks was only -7% and -5%
respectively.

This Week’s WWE Smackdown Live Rating,

WWE Smackdown Live
This week’s final rating for WWE
Smackdown Live was a 1.92 rating,
which is down from last week’s 2.20
rating, which was the first live
Smackdown on Tuesdays and the 2016
WWE Draft episode of the show. By
comparison, WWE RAW scored a 2.36
rating this week.
It was previously noted that this
week’s Smackdown averaged 2.743
million viewers, which was down from
last week’s draft show that averaged
3.170 million viewers.

UFC renews contract with BT Sport for television rights in Ireland and United Kingdom

According to MMA Fighting, Ultimate
Fighting Championship (UFC) officials
recently announced that it renewed a
broadcasting deal with BT Sport to give
the network exclusive rights to air UFC
events in the United Kingdom and
Ireland until 2018.
James Elliot -- general manager and
vice president of UFC Europe --
touched on the importance of the deal:
"There is no doubt that our initial
partnership with BT Sport placed
UFC and the sport of MMA in front
of an engaged sports audience
and helped to grow the sport in
the UK and Ireland. This renewal
is a signal from both
organizations that there is clearly
more to come and that BT Sport
provides the perfect platform on
which to continue to grow the
sport of MMA and UFC. The
potential for growth for both
organizations is huge and we are
delighted to be continuing our
partnership and to building
something special."
The channel aims to air every main
card and non-Fight Pass preliminary
fight live along with more than 150
hours of action a year, according to the
report.
It’s been a good couple of years for
both United Kingdom and Ireland when
it comes to the mixed martial arts
(MMA) world, as the UK saw Michael
Bisping become the first-ever MMA
fighter from that country to capture
UFC gold at UFC 199 by knocking out

UFC renews contract with BT Sport for television rights in Ireland and United Kingdom

According to MMA Fighting, Ultimate
Fighting Championship (UFC) officials
recently announced that it renewed a
broadcasting deal with BT Sport to give
the network exclusive rights to air UFC
events in the United Kingdom and
Ireland until 2018.
James Elliot -- general manager and
vice president of UFC Europe --
touched on the importance of the deal:
"There is no doubt that our initial
partnership with BT Sport placed
UFC and the sport of MMA in front
of an engaged sports audience
and helped to grow the sport in
the UK and Ireland. This renewal
is a signal from both
organizations that there is clearly
more to come and that BT Sport
provides the perfect platform on
which to continue to grow the
sport of MMA and UFC. The
potential for growth for both
organizations is huge and we are
delighted to be continuing our
partnership and to building
something special."
The channel aims to air every main
card and non-Fight Pass preliminary
fight live along with more than 150
hours of action a year, according to the
report.
It’s been a good couple of years for
both United Kingdom and Ireland when
it comes to the mixed martial arts
(MMA) world, as the UK saw Michael
Bisping become the first-ever MMA
fighter from that country to capture
UFC gold at UFC 199 by knocking out
Luke Rockhold.

recently tied a ribbon around its UFC on
FOX 20 mixed martial arts (MMA)
event, which took place last Sat. night
(July 23, 2016) inside United Center in
Chicago, Illinois (results), and there

Barboza, meanwhile, put the rest of
the 155-pound division on notice by
knocking around ex-Strikeforce champ
Gilbert Melendez (replay), who debuts
at No. 14 after his extended layoff.
Chad Mendes, meanwhile, was pulled

WWE Cruiserweight Classic Results – 7/27/16

CWC First Round
“Textbook” Tyson Dux vs. “The
Technical Wizard” Zack Sabre Jr.

Dux was trained by Terry Taylor and
Scott D’Amore and actually previously
worked for WWE for a few years about
a decade ago as a jobber before tearing
his ACL. Since then he worked for TNA
and ROH some and all over America
and Canada on the Indies. Sabre has
been one of the top technical
wrestlers in the world for the past
several years putting on some true
classics on the Indies in the past
couple of years. He also spent several
years working for Pro Wrestling NOAH
in Japan, where he actually faced
Daniel Bryan a few times (he also
faced him in Europe). Sabre
immediately goes to the mat with an
armlock and then a modified heel
hook. Dux counters with a single leg
takedown and then puts Sabre in his
own modified heel hook. Sabre rolls
over and lifts himself up into a
headlock on Dux. He takes Dux over
but Dux comes right back with a
headscissors. Sabre bridges up and out
of the hold and then ties Dux up in
more submissions and holds. Sabre
puts Dux in a Cravate and everytime
Dux attempts to escape Sabre
counters him right back into the
Cravate until Dux finally manages to
take Sabre over with a Snapmare
Takeover. Dux puts Sabre in his own
Cravate but Sabre actually bridges out
of it and into a wristlock. Sabre puts
Dux in a hammerlock and takes him
down to the mat and uses his leg to
keep the hammerlock on before
twisting the arm of Dux. Sabre puts
Dux in a Jim Breaks Special but Dux
fights out and scoop slams Sabre. Dux
hits a series of chops and then whips
him into the corner. Sabre elbows a
charging Dux and then connects with
a Diving European Uppercut from the
middle rope. Sabre follows up with a
Running European Uppercut in the
corner and then a Pele kick to the
outstretched arm of Dux. Sabre hits a
series of roundhouse kicks to that arm
but Dux catches a third attempt and
connects with a Brainbuster for a
nearfall. Dux puts Sabre in a Fujiwara
Armbar and Sabre rolls through it to
try and get away but Dux holds onto
the armbar. Sabre rolls Dux over into a
nearfall but Dux comes right back with
a Sliding Elbow for another nearfall.
Dux hits a series of forearms and then
hits the ropes but Sabre ducks under
him and locks Dux in an Octopus. Dux
reaches the ropes but then Sabre kicks
the arm again. Sabre attempts a
Roundhouse Kick but Dux moves and
Sabre comes right back with a Spinning
Leg Sweep followed by a Shining
Wizard! 1…2…NO Dux kicks out! Sabre
charges into an Atomic Drop and then
a Spike DDT! 1…2…NO Sabre kicks out!
Dux attempts a Texas Cloverleaf but
Sabre counters into a bridging pin for a
nearfall. Dux gets back up and hits a
nasty Lariat! Dux lifts Sabre up in a
Fireman’s Carry but Sabre counters
into a crazy hanging submission and
then into a Hanging Jim Breaks Special.
Dux falls to the mat and Sabre
transitions right into an Omoplata! Dux
almost gets to the ropes with one of
arms but Dux grabs it and starts
twisting on the fingers of Dux forcing
him to verbally submit.

Winner: Sabre via submission
(Omoplata)

“The Trailblazer” Drew Gulak vs. “The
Bollywood Boy” Harv Sihra
Gulak was trained by CHIKARA in
America with training from Mike
Quackenbush, Chris Hero and the
legenary Jorge “Skadye” Rivera. He has
worked all over America but his home
promotion for the longest was EVOLVE
before signing a developmental deal
with WWE. Sihra is a Canadian that
worked for TNA’s Indian side project
Ring Ka King along with Jeff Jarrett’s
GFW last year. He and his brother, Gurv
Sihra who will also be in this
tournament, are a tag team called the
Bollywood Boyz. Gulak immediately
starts mat wrestling Sihra with an
inside cradle for an early nearfall.
Sihra Monkey Flips Gulak but Gulak
rolls him into a body scissors. Sihra
counters the hold and Gulak
immediately gets to the ropes. They
shake hands and then Gulak takes
Sihra over with a Side Headlock
Takeover. Sihra gets back to his feet
but gets run over by a shoulder block
from Gulak. Sihra speeds things up but
Gulak catches him on a Cross Body
Block attempt. Gulak attempts a
Fireman’s Carry but Sihra rolls him up
for a nearfall followed by a Crucifix
Rollup for another nearfall. Sihra
comes right back with a small package
and again Gulak kicks out. Gulak
elbows Sihra and then hits a Diving
Clothesline off the top for a nearfall.
Gulak slaps Sihra repeatedly and then
actually Scoop Slams Sihra onto the
ropes in a nasty looking spot. Sihra
rolls to the apron and then backdrops
Gulak over the top to the floor. Sihra
hits a Springboard Plancha off the
ropes onto Gulak on the floor! Sihra
rolls Gulak into the ring and covers
him for a nearfall. Sihra rains down
some right hands on Gulak and then
connects with a Spinning Neckbreaker
for another nearfall. Gulak headbutts
Sihra and then climbs up top, but Sihra
crotches him and hits a Superplex off
the top. Sihra goes for a Sharpshooter
but Gulak blocks it and then
immediately locks Sihra in the Gu-Lock
(Dragon Sleeper) for the win!
Winner: Gulak via submission (Dragon
Sleeper)
CWC First Round
“The Premiere Athlete” Tony Nese vs.
Anthony Bennett
Nese was trained by Mikey Whipwreck
and spent the majority of 2011 and
2012 in TNA as a part of the X-Division.
He’s been working a lot for EVOLVE as
well. I don’t know much about
Anthony Bennett at all other than he
has a goofy 80’s style Kid-N-Play
haircut and does some even goofier
dancing. He even has an extra pair of
sunglasses on his hair. Nese takes
Bennett down with a Waistlock but
Bennett counters into a hammerlock.
Nese reverses him into a Side Headlock
only for Bennett to counter right back
into the hammerlock. Nese shoves
Bennett away and then leapfrogs a
charging Bennett. Nese matrixes out of
a clothesline attempt and then hits a
gorgeous series of strikes with knees
and kicks. Nese hits a series of
forearms and then tosses Bennett
through the ropes. Bennett lands on
the apron but then Nese nails him with
a Roundhouse Kick and then a
Spinning Leg Sweep. Bennett falls to
the floor and Nese sets up for a dive
but Bennett gets out of the way. Nese
lands on the apron and then leapfrogs
an attempt by Bennett to sweep his
legs. Nese then Superkicks Bennett
and attempts to Powerbomb him on
the floor! Bennett grabs the ropes to
escape and then dives off the apron
with a Somersault Plancha onto Nese
on the floor. Back in the ring Bennett
attempts a Butterfly Suplex but Nese
blocks it and then Flapjacks him onto
the top rope. Nese follows up with a
beautiful Springboard Asai Moonsault
for a nearfall. Nese goes for a Vertical
Suplex but Bennett counters with a
series of knees, Nese Suplexes him
anyway for a nearfall. Nese puts
Bennett in a Bodyscissors. Bennett
fights out of the hold and catches Nese
with an armdrag. Bennett hits a series
of forearms and then a series of Flying
Clotheslines. Bennett hits the ropes
and connects with a Pop-Up Dropkick.
Bennett goes for a Tornado DDT but
Nese blocks it and lifts Bennett back
up to the top. Bennett blocks a
roundhouse kick from Nese and hits a
Diving Tornado DDT for a nearfall. The
two exchange some stiff forearms and
then Nese attempts to duck through
the legs of Bennett but Bennett falls
botching the spot. Eventually Nese
gets back to the spot and slides
through Bennett’s legs into a Pump
Handle Slam. Nese goes to the top but
then the referee stops him and checks
on Bennett in a horrendous spot. The
referee tells Nese to go ahead and he
hits the 450 Splash for the pin.
Winner: Nese via pinfall (450 Splash)
Daniel Bryan suggests Bennett may
have separated his shoulder as a
trainer looks at Bennett’s arm.

CWC First Round
Brian Kendrick vs. Raul “Jinzo”
Mendoza
Mendoza is a Mexican luchador that
was trained by El Mexicano, Gran
Apache, and Black Tiger in Mexico and
previously worked masked as Jinzo and
Tribal. He changed his name earlier
this year to Ronnie Mendoza and now
here as Raul Mendoza. Kendrick is one
of the more well known guys in this
tournament. He was trained, alongside
Daniel Bryan, by Shawn Michaels’
“Texas Wrestling Academy” and
worked for WWE for years before
leaving in 2009. He joined TNA in 2010
and stayed there until 2013 and since
then has began training wrestlers
himself and working in Japan as well.
He is a former WWE Tag Team
Champion and TNA X-Division
Champion. Kendrick immediately takes
Mendoza down with an armlock but
Mendoza sweeps his leg and then
catches him with a Snapmare
Takeover. Mendoza puts Kendrick in a
chinlock but Kendrick counters into a
side headlock. Mendoza shoves
Kendrick into the ropes but eats a
shoulder block. Kendrick leapfrogs
Mendoza but then Mendoza flips over
his back and catches Kendrick with a
hurricanrana. Kendrick rolls to the
floor and then Mendoza fakes a dive
which irritates Kendrick. Back in the
ring Kendrick attempts a dropkck but
Mendoza sidesteps him and puts
Kendrick in a nuts Kneebar spinning
Kendrick in the air and then slamming
him into the mat and continuing to
lock in the Kneebar! Kendrick manages
to get to the ropes and then he kicks
Mendoza in the face as the referee
separated them. Kendrick rakes
Mendoza’s face on the middle rope and
then forces Mendoza’s mouth around
the ropes and kicks the ropes. Kendrick
puts Mendoza in a Double Armbar and
it looks like Mendoza’s lip is busted.
Kendrick attempts a Lariat but
Mendoza rolls him up for a nearfall.
Kendrick comes back with a Sliding
Elbow on Mendoza. Kendrick hits a
Running Clothesline on Mendoza in
the corner and then he attempts to
toss Mendoa into the ropes, but
Mendoza slides through the ropes and
connects with a crazy Springboard
Missile Dropkick! Kendrick rolls to the
floor and Mendoza comes flying over
the top with a gorgeous Corkscrew
Plancha onto Kendrick on the floor!
Mendoza rolls Kendrick in the ring and
then goes for a Springboard 450 but
Kendrick moves out of the way.
Mendoza lands on his feet and
connects with a Leaping Enziguri! 1…
2…NO Kendrick kicks out! Mendoza
slams Kendrick in the corner and then
charges right into a boot from
Kendrick. Kendrick follows up with a
Sliding Dropkick and then he climbs up
top. Mendoza kicks Kendrick’s legs out
from underneath him hanging
Kendrick up in the tree of woe.
Mendoza Superkicks him and then
Mendoza goes to the opposite corner
and hits a UAM Terminator (Van-
Terminator)! Mendoza follows up with
a Backstabber! 1…2…NO Kendrick got
his foot on the bottom rope. Mendoza
hits a series of elbows and kicks and
then Kendrick falls to the mat and
plays like he has a head injury.
Kendrick then pulls Mendoza into the
ropes and rolls him up with the Bully
Choke for the submission!
Winner: Kendrick via submission (Bully
Choke)

Mark Hunt Upset At UFC Over Handling Of Brock Lesnar, Conor McGregor Crashes Nate Diaz Appearance

- What do you get when you put Conor
McGregor, Nate Diaz and Justin Bieber
together? An interesting moment for
all watching a recent episode of
"Conan" on TBS. The program, hosted
by Conan O'Brien, was featuring Diaz
when McGregor made an appearance
via tape-delayed message.

Where does Bieber fit into all this?
Well, the pop singer made a comment
regarding the first McGregor-Diaz fight
several months back. McGregor and
Diaz will square off once again this
August at UFC 202.
McGregor also "apologized" to O'Brien
for not showing up, adding "As a
present, I sent Nate in my place. I just
hope he's not up on that stage wearing
that stupid black t-shirt he's never out
of."
- Mark Hunt is not the type of
individual to shy away from speaking
his mind. So, as the days go by and we
get further and further away from
Brock Lesnar's failed drug test results
coming back, Hunt isn't going away.
Hunt, who lost via decision to Lesnar at
UFC 200, continued his all-out verbal
assault against the UFC during a recent
appearance on "The MMA Hour."
Lesnar failed both a pre-fight and a
post-fight drug test.
"What upsets me about that is, I'm just
thinking maybe they knew," Hunt said
(thanks to ESPN for transcribing). "Did
they know about this? Is that why
they're not doing anything about it?
Did they give this (expletive) fool an
exemption for four months because
they knew about this? Because surely
if they know about this, they don't give
a rat's about any of us. 'Hey man, we'll
let this juiced up freaking monkey go
in here and fight with this guy.' I mean,
shucks, people say (I) should have a
rematch with him. I wouldn't want to
waste my time with that. He's rubbish."
Since his interview, Hunt has spoken to
a member of the UFC's board. Lesnar
was the third fighter he has faced off
against that failed a drug test, as
Antonio Silva and Frank Mir were also
flagged. Hunt won both of those fights.

a rat's about any of us. 'Hey man, we'll
let this juiced up freaking monkey go
in here and fight with this guy.' I mean,
shucks, people say (I) should have a
rematch with him. I wouldn't want to
waste my time with that. He's rubbish."
Since his interview, Hunt has spoken to
a member of the UFC's board. Lesnar
was the third fighter he has faced off
against that failed a drug test, as
Antonio Silva and Frank Mir were also
flagged. Hunt won both of those fights.

- Finn Balor making his WWE RAW

Joe Rogan re-ups with UFC for another year ... with a catch

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
color commentator Joe Rogan, despite
his insistence that a change in
ownership would result in a change of
jobs
, will be sticking around the world's
preeminent mixed martial arts (MMA)
promotion for at least another year.
The catch?
A reduced schedule (his choice) has
relegated his current role to pay-per-
view (PPV) only, which means
opportunities for existing "Fight Night"
commentator and former fighter Brian
Stann
, or perhaps fellow talkers Kenny
Florian and Dan Hardy, among others.
"I was on the fence, man," Rogan said
on his official podcast. "I just do too
much shit. I'm too fucking busy. After a
while I'm like, I don't know if I'm doing
myself or all the different things I do a
disservice. I was real close. It was like,
either I'm just gonna completely bail
off of this or I'm gonna figure it out."
Rogan, a successful comic and
podcaster, has been with UFC since
1997.
UFC was acquired by WME | IMG earlier
this year for $4.2 billion, which not
surprisingly, initiated dialogue about
who would stay and who would go.
Part of that deal has UFC CEO Lorenzo
Fertitta stepping down, while
promotion president Dana White is
contracted to hang around for another
five years
.
These could be the last 12 months of
Rogan's UFC career, enjoy them while
you can.

The 50 Greatest Wrestlers Of The Last 50 Years: Shawn Michaels Joins The List

#22 Shawn Michaels
.
.
.
The opinions expressed in this article
are those of the author and do not
reflect the views of WrestlingInc or its
staff
According to WWE's DVD titled "The 50
Greatest WWE Superstars of All-Time"
Shawn Michaels is the greatest
wrestler to ever lace them up for WWE.
In 2014 a poll of WrestlingInc.com
readers proved that readers believed
that Michaels was the best North
American wrestler of the last 25 years.
A lot of people believe that Michaels
deserves to be much higher on this list,
and there is definitely an argument
that he could be in the Top Ten at
least. However, I believe there are
some glaring errors in his career which
ultimately have him slotted here, at #
22, which by the way isn't that bad of a
spot.
Michaels grew up in a military family
that moved around a lot before
settling in South Texas. The captain of
his high school football team, Michaels
started training with popular Mexican
wrestler Jose Lothario who was a
prominent star in the Texas territory.
He made his debut in 1984 and by 1985
was working for World Class
Championship Wrestling and different
National Wrestling Alliance territories.
In the Kansas City territory he began
teaming with Marty Jannetty, a
wrestler of similar build and
athleticism. For the next several years
Michaels would be almost exclusively
a tag team wrestler, pairing with
Jannetty to form one of the best tag
teams of the 1980s.

In 1986 Michaels and Jannetty began
working for Verne Gagne in the
American Wrestling Association. Their
tag team was called "The Midnight
Rockers" a play on the popular tag
teams The Midnight Express and The
Rock n' Roll Express. The duo would
end up capturing the AWA World Tag
Team Championships from Doug
Somers and Buddy Rose in January of
1987. The duo caught the eye of Vince
McMahon and were brought into the
World Wrestling Federation, but their
time in the promotion would be short-
lived. Michaels and Jannetty were
notorious partiers, as famous for their
late night antics as they were for
moonsaults and superkicks. Following
an incident at a bar, Michaels and
Jannetty were fired from the WWF just
two weeks after signing with the
promotion. The team would go back to
the AWA before being brought back
into the WWF later in 1987.
The team's name was abbreviated to
just "The Rockers" and their high-
energy and athletic wrestling made
them a popular babyface tag team,
especially with women and children
who made up a large portion of WWE's
audience during the Hulkamania era.
Despite their popularity, The Rockers
rarely won important matches, instead
being defined as an underdog team
that tried very hard but were
ultimately defeated by larger tag
teams.
By 1990 the tag team division in the
WWF was thinning out and The
Rockers began to work with The Hart
Foundation who were the WWF World
Tag Team Champions. The team would
actually win the championship from
The Hart Foundation at a TV taping,
but the match was never broadcasted
due to Vince McMahon changing his
mind on the decision to take the
championships off of The Hart
Foundation. The team would continue
to work together until December of
1991, when Michaels turned on
Jannetty and threw him through a
window on the set of Brutus
Beefcake's talk-show The Barber
Shop.
Michaels would then strike out on his
own as "The Boy Toy" and "The
Heartbreak Kid" and was paired with
Sensational Sherri who had recently
left Randy Savage. It was as singles
star that Michaels showed that he was
undeniably going to be superstar for
the company. While he was teaming
with Jannetty it was acknowledged
that Michaels was a good worker and a
great athlete, but his ability to carry
himself on the mic and his overall
showmanship and charisma were
virtually unknown.
Michaels quickly got over following his
breakup with Jannetty and won his
first singles PPV match, defeating
veteran Tito Santana at WrestleMania
VIII. Michaels was given a tremendous
opportunity as a young heel in 1992,
contending for Savage's WWF World
Heavyweight Championship, coming up
short at WWF's UK only PPV UK
Rampage. Michaels would then make
history, wrestling Bret Hart in the first-
ever ladder match to ever take place in
the WWF. Michaels would prove
unsuccessful, but the match would
soon become a staple for the WWF as
an exciting way to settle title feuds.
Michaels would capture his first
singles title in October of 1992 when
he defeated The British Bulldog for the
Intercontinental Championship.
Michaels then main evented Survivor
Series against Hart and his WWF World
Heavyweight Championship, coming up
short.
Michaels would lose the
Intercontinental Championship to his
former partner Jannetty on Monday
Night Raw in a match that was voted
the Match of the Year by readers of
the Wrestling Observer. Michaels
would regain the championship shortly
thereafter with help of his
"bodyguard" Diesel. Michaels would
get suspended for failing a drug test,
and would be stripped of the
championship. He returned at Survivor
Series '93 when he filled in for Jerry
Lawler in a tag team match against
Hart.
Michaels would then begin a long feud
with Razor Ramon, who had captured
the Intercontinental Championship
after Michaels vacated the
championship. Michaels claimed that
since he never actually lost the
championship he was the rightful
champion and began to wear his own
championship belt. Eventually the two
championships were hung from the
balcony of Madison Square Garden in a
ladder match at WrestleMania X.
Michaels was absolutely spectacular in
the match in what would become a
theme for him on the big stage, coming
up short against Ramon and yet still
managing to be the real winner down
the road.

Viewers numbers of Tna thrusday show

This is from the last week's thrusday show that drew 358,000 viewers.

It was the first night of impact wrestling on its new time slot thrusday.

Impact, headlined by Lashley vs. Eddie

among adults 18-49. This is down from
last week’s 0.12 on Tuesday.

Several Top Independent Names Offered Full-time WWE Deals

It looks like several of the names
featured on the Cruiserweight Classic
may stay on board after the
tournament is over. Cedric Alexander,
26, Kota Ibushi, 34, Mascara Dorada, 27,
and Akira Tozawa, 30, are believed to
have been offered deals.
Also, Yoshihiro Tajiri, 45, is being
considered. Dorada is wrestling in the
Cruiserweight Classic as Gran Metalik
so that should be a sign that a deal has
been signed or that they have at least
agreed to a deal because WWE does
not change a talent’s name if they
don’t expect to sign them to a deal.
Most, or all, of the names listed have
not signed contracts because they
have yet to go through the required
medicals and background checks.
Ibushi is someone that can go up to the
main roster right away and with his
neck issues, he may not be able to
work at a high level for too many more
years.
As previously noted, Johnny Gargano
will be working full-time for NXT once
he finishes his existing independent
dates. Tommaso Ciampa is also
expected to start working full-time,
presumably in NXT.

Ric Flair Upset With Karl Anderson Over A Joke Made On Chris Jericho’s Podcast

Ric Flair is not happy. On the latest Ric
Flair Show podcast, co-host Conrad
Thompson played audio from AJ Styles,
Karl Anderson and Luke Gallow’s
appearance on Chris Jericho’s podcast.
The Jericho podcast was meant to be
lighthearted with Gallows and
Anderson doing some of the
characters from their old Talk N’ Shop
podcast. AJ Styles was also on the
show and he did his “Nature Hoot”
impression of Flair.
At one point, you could hear a voice
saying, “what do you know about $
40,000?” It’s unclear who was talking
but Flair seemed to think that it was
Karl Anderson. I don’t think that the
intention was to rip Flair but Flair didn’t
seem to appreciate it. The comment
was in reference to the $41,000 that
Flair allegedly owes former ROH
owner/current ambassador Cary Silkin.
Silkin filed a lawsuit in 2010 alleging
that Flair owed him $41,000 after no-
showing 4 ROH shows in 2009. The
lawsuit was dropped in 2011 when
Sinclair Broadcasting purchased ROH
but Silkin still maintains that Flair
owes him the money.
Flair said, “Imitation is the greatest
form of flattery. I love AJ. I have all the
time in the world for him. We got
relatively close in TNA and I got a lot of
respect for him. I think the world of
Luke Gallows [and] I’ve gotten to know
him real well. [The] Anderson kid, he
sounds like Shane Douglas trying to be
cute. I guess he can be cute next time
he sees me because I’ll bring it up to
him.” He added, “It is what it is. They
take these shots. The problem is that if
you say it, you gotta be held
accountable. I knew what he was
saying and he could say it to my face.”

Chael Sonnen submits to USADA testing, but don't pencil in UFC comeback just yet

Here's an interesting little tidbit about
your favorite "Bad Guy," who may
finally be listening to the voice of
reason.
It seems former Ultimate Fighting
Championship (UFC) middleweight No.
1 contender, Chael Sonnen, has re-
entered the United States Anti-Doping
(USADA) testing pool, which would
allow him to compete without applying
for the dreaded Brock Lesnar loophole.
But don't pencil in that comeback just
yet.
"Not if the test is as good as I
remember it being," Sonnen told MMA
Junkie about his chances of scrapping
retirement and returning to mixed
martial arts (MMA) later this year.
Despite a couple of high-profile losses
to Anderson Silva and Jon Jones, the
part-time grappling promoter holds
some pretty impressive wins inside the
Octagon, including finishes over Brian
Stann and Mauricio Rua, as well as a
unanimous decision against Michael
Bisping.
Unfortunately, the recent lows
overshadow the longtime highs, but
there is certainly a way to change
that.

Why WWE Didn’t Draft Many Top NXT Stars To RAW or SmackDown

The WWE brand-extension draft
is over, and to no surprise, there
seems to be more focus on who
wasn’t drafted over who was.
It was made clear in the draft
rules that six NXT talents would
be drafted. Samoa Joe, Shinsuke
Nakamura, Asuka and Bayley
were not included in that six.
Cue the madness.
All four of those NXT talents are
among the most popular, and all
can hold their own on RAW and
SmackDown. But what about
NXT?
You have to keep star power for
the ever-growing and surging
third brand. NXT has grown to
something bigger than originally
imagined and can sell out
venues that are also used by
RAW or SmackDown for their
Takeover shows. It has become
the cool brand under the WWE
umbrella with its melting pot of
talent and styles from all around
the world, many with an
underground following already.
If it’s going to stay that way, you
can’t pillage the entire roster at
once.
Sure, the four big names not
drafted are more polished
performers than Mojo Rawley,
Carmella or Alexa Bliss, all of
whom were drafted to the shock
of many, including myself. But
on RAW and SmackDown, these
new draft picks from NXT won’t
have the pressure or expectation
to be top draws on the top of the
card right away. They can get
more experience working their
way through the middle of the
card.
If Rawley, Carmella and Bliss
weren’t drafted and Joe,
Nakamura, Bayley and Asuka
were, do you think Rawley,
Carmella and Bliss have the
ability to headline NXT?

the rosters. As first reported earlier by
Pro Wrestling Sheet, Jinder Mahal was
one of the names that WWE has talked
with. Multiple sources told us that MVP
and Shelton Benjamin have agreed to
a deal. We were also told that WWE has
shown interest in Melina but, as of last
word, no deal has been reached yet
with her.
For those that have asked about Kurt
Angle, he is not taking additional
independent bookings this year. He is
taking time to heal up from his knee
issues and the feeling from his
management is that he still expects
for something to pan out with WWE
next year.
In regards to the stories going around
about Jeff Hardy, he is open to a return
to WWE but he is still on the last year
of his TNA contract. His contract
expires on February 28, 2017 so that
would, in theory, be perfect timing for
a return during WrestleMania season.
One story making the rounds within
WWE is that some of the names that
they have reached out to have turned
down WWE because they were offering
low-level deals to some names. That’s
the reason why Carlito turned down
their initial offer to return last year.
All signings are not official until the
standard medical exams are completed
in Pittsburgh and the talent is being
told to keep things quiet

Jinder Mahal Reportedly In Talks To Return To WWE

Former WWE star Jinder Mahal, 30, is
being considered for a possible return
to WWE. The news was reported by Pro
Wrestling Sheet.
Multiple sources tell Ryan Satin that
Jinder had been talking with WWE
about returning so he could help fill
out the rosters, although both sides
have not had talks for several weeks.
WWE’s talent depth issues are obvious
so it would only help the company if
they brought back some former talent
that could still go in the ring. Dave
Meltzer broke the news several weeks
ago on WWE reaching out to several
former stars about returning. Carlito,
Brian Myers, MVP, and Stevie Richards
were some of the other names that
were contacted.
Mahal was spotted backstage at the
TNA Slammiversary pay-per-view
several weeks ago but it doesn’t look
like a deal was made. In the meantime,
Mahal continues to work on the
independent circuit. He’s working for
Lucha Elite on 6/23, All-Star Wrestling
in Vancouver on 6/24 and Calgary on
6/25.
Mahal last worked for WWE in 2014. He
and Drew McIntyre were part of the
3MB faction before they were released.

WWE Bringing Back Squash Matches?

There has been talk about doing
squash matches on TV. Dave Meltzer
reports that the idea is that the squash
matches would be a better way to get
new talent over. It’s something that
has been talked about but, as you
know by now, ideas change daily.
Squash matches were a staple of WWE
programming in the 80s and 90s. In
fact, most WWE programs featured
squash matches. The syndicated
shows, WWE Superstars & Wrestling
Challenge, rarely featured matches
between top stars because the idea
was that you wanted to hold off the
big matches for pay-per-views or the
occasional Saturday Night’s Main Event
special on NBC.
NXT has been doing squash matches.
Patrick Clark was used in the jobber
role on this week’s NXT. He lost to
Austin Aries. It makes sense because
they are building Aries for a match
with No Way Jose. Clark is losing
matches now but they can always
begin his push once they have a
storyline ready for him.
If they push forward with the squash
matches on the main roster, then they
would likely use some returning
veterans. Dave Meltzer wrote several
weeks ago that WWE wanted to bring
back some former stars so that they
could help get over some of the new
talent. They’ve done this before. In
2002, WWE signed Goldust and “Mr.
Perfect” Curt Hennig so that they
could help get the younger talent
over. Hennig lost most of his matches
on WWE TV during that period.

Brandi Rhodes Comments On Her WWE Departure

Former WWE announcer Brandi Rhodes
recently spoke with Chris Featherstone
of FOX Sports. During the interview,
Rhodes talked about her WWE
departure and more. Here are the
highlights.
On the WWE schedule: “I don’t think
you ever really get used to that degree
of travel, because it’s pretty
unpredictable,” Brandi said. “Some
weeks, you get to be home for one day.
Some weeks you get to be home for
three days. You really don’t know
except for kind of the week-to-week.
So, it’s kind of a scattered lifestyle. I
wasn’t a big fan of flying. I’ve never
been a big fan of flying. Having to jump
right in and fly so much, so many
flights a week. If you think about it, it’s
at least two flights a week, mostly
three or four. It’s a lot of get up and go,
and not a lot of sleep. For me, it was
quite taxing.”
On her WWE departure: “Here’s the
kicker. I was already leaving before he
left, so it wasn’t a tough decision at
all,” she said. “The only thing that
changed in me leaving was I just asked
for it to be pushed up one month, and
that was it. I was already leaving, and
had not let them know yet. But, about
three weeks out, I let them know I was
not interested in re-signing. Him
leaving quickly as he did and being
granted his release fairly quickly just
made it easier for me to say I’m ready
to move on.”
